چکیده

The paper investigates an evidence-based semantics for epistemic logics. It is shown that the properties of knowledge obtained from a potentially infinite body evidence are described by modal logic S5. At same time, only finite subset this S4. main technical result sound and complete bi-modal logical system describes these two modalities their interplay.

Attainable Knowledge

The article investigates an evidence-based semantics for epistemic logics in which pieces of evidence are interpreted as equivalence relations on the epistemic worlds. It is shown that the properties of knowledge obtained from potentially infinitely many pieces of evidence are described by modal logic S5. At the same time, the properties of knowledge obtained from only a finite number of pieces...

Knowledge, Logical Omniscience, and Resource-bounded Reasoning

Agent theories typically use modal epistemic logic for modeling knowledge of agents. Since the modal approach to epistemic logic cannot formalize resource-bounded reasoning adequately, it it not suited to describe realistic, implementable agents. We develop a framework for solving that problem. We introduce the notion of algorithmic knowledge — a concept that establishes a direct link between a...

Knowledge and the Problem of Logical Omniscience

The notion of knowledge has recently acquired a great deal of importance in Computer Science, partly because of its importance in AI and expert systems, but also because of applications in distributed computing and possible, even likely relevance to cryptography. See [H2] for a representative collection of papers on knowledge. An important outstanding problem in the logic of knowledge is the pr...

Knowledge, Time, and the Problem of Logical Omniscience

It is well known that Modal Epistemic logic (MEL) suffers from the problem of logical omniscience. In this paper, we will argue that in order to solve the problem, the temporal dimension of knowledge has to be revealed and following this analysis, we present a general epistemic framework, timed Modal Epistemic Logic (tMEL), modified from MEL, such that the time at which a formula is known by an...

Grounding and Omniscience

I’m going to argue that omniscience is impossible and therefore that there is no God. The argument turns on the notion of grounding. After illustrating and clarifying that notion, I’ll start the argument in earnest. The first step will be to lay out five claims, one of which is the claim that there is an omniscient being, and the other four of which are claims about grounding. I’ll prove that t...
